About This Project
We know, this question is too subjective! We can enjoy a very broken work of art if it is explained to us properly, or if it really matters to us.
We are heritage scientists at UCL, and we want to know precisely how difficult it is to answer this question.
When we ask about "damage," we are asking about how deterioration is perceived. Does degradation impair the enjoyment of a work of art? Does it reduce its heritage value? Or perhaps degradation has helped an object age beautifully? Are the answers so diverse that they defy analysis? Do we tend to be concerned by some types of damage more than others?
There are hundreds of ways to ask this question in more depth. All methods (interviews, focus groups, surveys with demographic data) have their place. The purpose of this app is to gather a large number of answers in a fun way. Contributions are totally anonymous (we do not even store IP addresses or locations).
The images come from the amazing ARTeFACT dataset.
